NCC History Professor Steve Berizzi will present a lecture on "American Democracy's Attempted Suicide: President Abraham Lincoln, the Constitution, and Saving the Nation,” on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. at the Rowayton Community Center.
This presentation is the final in an eight-part Civil War lecture series sponsored by the Rowayton Historical Society.
It will focus on the role of the Constitution in the events that led to war and will examine some constitutional issues between 1860 and 1865.
These include secession, the Union navy's blockade of the Confederacy, the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus (first in Maryland and then throughout the Union), the Confiscation Acts, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth Amendment, conscription and restrictions on civil liberties.
Admission is $5 per person; free to Rowayton Historical Society members.
