Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic course begins Aug. 27; Register Now

Registration is now underway for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic course at Norwalk Community College.

The 39-session program will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on select Saturdays, beginning August 27, 2012.

This non-credit program is offered by the NCC Division of Extended Studies and Workforce Education (www.ncc.commnet.edu, click on Extended Studies.)

EMT Basic teaches proper techniques in First Aid, patient assessments, extrications, communication and other essential concepts to prepare a student to become an Emergency Medical Technician.

The course will include training in hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and terrorism awareness. Offered in partnership with Norwalk Hospital, this course meets all National Registry and Connecticut requirements. Students will be eligible to take the National Registry exam.

EMT Basic requires an extensive amount of reading. In additional, all students are required to complete EMS clinical training at Norwalk Hospital. Students must provide evidence of a physical examination performed within 12 months prior to the state of the class.

The instructor is Harry A Downs II, EMT-P, EMS-I. Downs has been a field paramedic at Norwalk Hospital for 21 years and has more than 30 years of experience in pre-hospital emergency care. He has been an EMS instructor for 20 years.
