Elvis Presley fans will be happy to know that Norwalk Community College will offer a course focused on their idol titled “Elvis Presley: and the American Dream” during the fall 2012 semester. The three- credit course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 – 2: 20 p.m.
Course content will examine the life and influence of Elvis Presley as a cultural icon who, more than any public figure of the 20th Century embodied the racial, sexual, generational, historical and cultural tensions that exploded with force across the American landscape in the 1950’s.
Elvis had a musical style and public persona that presaged the new social realities of the times. He was a musical cross-over who epitomized in his music, films, life and death, the best and worst of what America was and is.
Students will rediscover the roots of Rock ‘N Roll by reading essays by music historians and first- hand accounts of those who were there. They will listen to original recordings and view vintage performances, classic films and rare documentaries. Come and join this exciting class and find out what all the screaming was about.
