“The Piano,” the third spring offering of NCC’s popular Movies-of-the-Month FREE Film Series, will be shown at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, March 7, in the East Campus Forum Theater.
This 1993 film was directed by Jane Campion, and stars Holly Hunter, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel, and Sam Neill. Film critic Leonard Maltin gave the film three and a half out of 4 stars and described it as a “haunting, unpredictable tale of love and sex, told from a woman’s point of view.”
This memorable drama is set in the late 19th century, when a Scottish woman, her illegitimate daughter, and her beloved piano arrive in remote New Zealand for an arranged marriage to a farmer. Hunter’s headstrong character strikes a bargain with a moody neighbor, played by Keitel, involving the piano that leads to eye-opening and life-changing consequences for the entire community.
Oscars went to both Hunter and Paquin, as well as to Campion for her screenplay. This film will be presented by Dr. Bernice Marie-Daley, director of the NCC Fairfield County Women’s Center, who will also moderate a discussion following the film.
