Placement Testing Exemptions

College Credit Exemption

Students who have attended other colleges may be exempt from the placement test.

If you have taken previous college-level English and/or math credits and received a grade of C (2.0) or better, you are exempt from taking the placement test in that specific area.  Please submit a copy of your college transcript.

If you have earned an associate's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, NCC assumes that you have the English skills to do college-level work.  You are therefore exempt from taking the English portion of the placement test.

If you have earned a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university, NCC assumes that you have the English and math skills necessary for college-level work.  In most cases, you are therefore exempt from taking the placement test.  Please note that NCC reserves the right to require the math placement test for certain programs or courses.

If your college background exempts you from taking the placement test, you can schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center (203-857-7033) for advisement and registration.

SAT and ACT Exemption

Students who have taken the College Board SAT or ACT exam may be exempt from the English and/or math sections of the placement test.

If your SAT Math score is between 500 - 549 or your ACT math score is between 18 - 21: You are exempt from taking the math portion of the placement test and can be placed into Intermediate Algebra (MAT 136). However, if you wish to place into a higher level math class, you may take the math portion of the placement test.  You can schedule an appointment on the NCC website for the math portion of the Basic Skills placement test.

If your SAT Math score is between 550 - 599 or your ACT math score is 22 or higher: You are exempt from taking the math portion of the placement test and can be placed into College Algebra (MAT 172) or Statistics (MAT 201).  However, if you wish to place into a higher level math class, you may take the math portion of the placement test.  You can schedule an appointment on the NCC website for the math portion of the Basic Skills placement test.

If your SAT Math score is 600 or higher: You are exempt from taking the math portion of the placement test and can be placed into Pre-Calculus (MAT 186). However, if you wish to place into a higher level math class, you may take the math portion of the placement test.  You can schedule an appointment on the NCC website for the math portion of the Basic Skills placement test.

If you are exempt from taking both portions of the placement test, you may schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center (203-857-7033) for advisement and registration.  Please bring your test scores when meeting with a counselor and have an official copy sent to NCC.
