Students who have attended other colleges may be exempt from the placement test.
If you have taken previous college-level English and/or math credits and received a grade of C (2.0) or better, you are exempt from taking the placement test in that specific area. Please submit a copy of your college transcript.
If you have earned an associate's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, NCC assumes that you have the English skills to do college-level work. You are therefore exempt from taking the English portion of the placement test.
If you have earned a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university, NCC assumes that you have the English and math skills necessary for college-level work. In most cases, you are therefore exempt from taking the placement test. Please note that NCC reserves the right to require the math placement test for certain programs or courses.
If your college background exempts you from taking the placement test, you can schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center (203-857-7033) for advisement and registration.
Students who have taken the College Board SAT
or ACT exam may be exempt from the English and/or math sections of the
placement test.
If your SAT Critical Reading score or SAT
Writing score is 450 or higher or your ACT English score is 21 or higher
or your composite ACT English and Reading score is 47 or higher: You are
exempt from taking the English portion of the placement test and can be
placed into College Composition (ENG 101).
If your SAT Math score is between 450 and
499: You may be exempt from taking the math portion of the placement
test. Please contact Deborah Golden at 203-857-3366 for further
information.
If your SAT Math score is between 500 - 549
or your ACT math score is between 18 - 21: You are exempt from taking
the math portion of the placement test and can be placed into
Intermediate Algebra (MAT 136). However, if you wish to place into a
higher level math class, you may take the math portion of the placement
test. You can schedule an appointment on the NCC website for the
math portion of the Basic Skills placement test.
If your SAT Math score is between 550 - 599
or your ACT math score is 22 or higher: You are exempt from taking the
math portion of the placement test and can be placed into College
Algebra (MAT 172) or Statistics (MAT 201). However, if you wish to
place into a higher level math class, you may take the math portion of
the placement test. You can schedule an appointment on the NCC
website for the math portion of the Basic Skills placement test.
If your SAT Math score is 600 or higher: You
are exempt from taking the math portion of the placement test and can be
placed into Pre-Calculus (MAT 186). However, if you wish to place into a
higher level math class, you may take the math portion of the placement
test. You can schedule an appointment on the NCC website for the
math portion of the Basic Skills placement test.
If you are exempt from taking both portions of the placement test, you may schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center (203-857-7033) for advisement and registration. Please bring your test scores when meeting with a counselor and have an official copy sent to NCC.
