The lab is designed to be used by all ESL students and faculty for listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking/pronunciation practice using software, audio, video, digital text and media, and online resources. Students in 022, 132, and 142 classes complete a 50-minute lab per week. These labs provide valuable listening, note-taking, grammar, and vocabulary practice needed in college-level work. All other ESL students are welcome to use the lab for self-study.
Accommodating up to 27 students at one time, the lab uses Sony SANS, a digital language lab environment. Digital and analog audio/video can be sent to each student while students work on screen or on paper. Students can work in pairs and groups with the instructor using their headsets. Instructors can monitor students' written and oral work and give immediate feedback. DVDs, audio CDs, VHS tapes, and digital files of any type can be utilized in the lab.
The lab has open hours when students can practice pronunciation, listening, vocabulary, grammar, and TOEFL; listen to online audio/video programs; do research; and work on assignments. We encourage all ESL students to use the lab for self-study. Check the lab schedule for the open hours.
