"This… is meant to show how, for those of us who live in the most precarious places in this country, our destinies can be determined by a single stumble down the wrong path, or a tentative step down the right one."
On December 4th, 2012 The Committee for Diversity and
Inclusion in partnership with Student Activities and the NCC Common Read
Committee is proud to present Wes Moore, author, youth advocate and Army
veteran to the NCC community. Moore wrote a story about his life and
that of another man who holds the same name. They both grew up in
similar neighborhoods and had a similar upbringing, however, a twist of
faith would lead one man to become incarcerated while the other to be a
respected Rhodes Scholar.
Moore will be on campus December, 4th speaking to NCC
students and later that day will be attending a luncheon hosted by the
NCC Culinary Arts Department.
Norwalk Community College recognizes, appreciates and values diversity.
Students come from all over the world to attend NCC, and the college has become
a mecca in Fairfield County for learning and respectful discussion that cuts
across social and cultural divides. The college creates a learning and working
environment that is free of discrimination and accessible to individuals with
disabilities. Our students hail from 63 foreign countries and speak 32
languages. The student body is multicultural and diverse in terms of age,
gender, religious beliefs, aspirations and background. NCC students range in age
from 15 to 90. NCC is enriched by a wide range of cultural, geographic,
socioeconomic, racial and social perspectives.
NCC is a member college
of the United Nations Academic Impact, a global initiative that aligns
institutions of higher education with the United Nations in actively supporting
10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, literacy,
sustainability and conflict resolution. NCC has integrated global awareness and
social responsibility into its curriculum with the goal of molding globally
conscious citizens.

The college has an active Committee for Diversity and Inclusion, which
includes student, faculty and staff members.
"Everyone is welcome at NCC and
we feel that we have fostered an environment of mutual respect and acceptance
that could well be a model for peace and prosperity in the larger world
community. We hear every voice, regardless of the language in which it is
spoken."
The NCC Committee for Diversity and Inclusion shall be a
vehicle for faculty and staff inclusion initiatives. The Committee shall
support the Mission of the College particularly as it pertains to meeting the
higher educational needs of a community characterized by economic, social and
cultural contrasts. The Committee shall provide the leadership necessary to
generate and facilitate constructive dialogue. It shall gather and disseminate
information, including curricular support, and provide activities for faculty,
staff and students within our diverse NCC community.
