On October 13, a labyrinth made of over 1,000 Canada goose and wild turkey feathers was installed on the East Campus, at the top of the hill between the North parking lot and Richards Avenue (at the evergreen tree). It was designed by Professor Renae Edge. Melissa Slattery, Nancy Merlino, and Megan Zitnay (A.A. Graphic Design 2008) helped in the labyrinth’s construction. This is the third labyrinth designed and built at NCC by Professor Edge.
Labyrinths have a long history dating back over 3000 years and were embedded into the floors of cathedrals as a place of prayer and meditation.
Professor Edge’s following poem for the labyrinth explains what she means by an awakened heart:
The Awakened Heart
The awakened heart
is asleep for no one.
It comforts
the just
and the unjust
equally.
It cries
for the innocent
and the guilty
equally.
It sees
beauty
in the perfect
and the imperfect
equally.
Thus, it erases
the naming
of all things,
so that
every thing
knows
it is
The
One.
